The Council of Ministers has approved a bill to delegate the Executive on new sustainable nuclear energy.

"With the latest generation nuclear, together with renewables - explains Minister Pichetto in a note - we will be able to achieve the objectives of decarbonization , guaranteeing the full energy security of the country. In this way, Italy is ready to face the challenges of the future ".

The objective of the measure is to achieve, with the contribution of this energy source, the targets of decarbonization and energy security, as outlined in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan. The new nuclear will have to ensure sufficient energy at affordable prices, with a containment of energy costs and the strengthening of the competitiveness of the system.

"We intervened to provide an immediate response to the needs of the moment, but we also decided to look to the future with long-term choices, because this is what Italy needs, courageous and structural choices ," announced Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. "It is the commitment we have made to the Italians and it is the commitment we intend to respect." In addition to the bill decree, "today the government has also approved another important measure to guarantee safe, clean, low-cost energy, capable of ensuring energy security and strategic independence for Italy. I am obviously talking about nuclear energy, on which we are now asking Parliament to express its opinion."

The delegation provides that the Government adopts a series of legislative decrees, within 12 months of entry into force, to organically regulate the entire life cycle of the new sustainable energy, through the drafting of a National Program : from the testing, localization, construction and operation of the new modules, to the issue of manufacturing and reprocessing of the fuel that will be addressed in a circular economy vision.

The decommissioning and dismantling of existing plants, waste and spent fuel management, research, development and use of fusion energy, the reorganization of skills and functions, including the establishment of an independent Authority for safety, supervision and control, will also be addressed . The delegation will also serve to provide training and information tools, train new technicians and professionals in the sector, and identify benefits for the territories involved.
