Two weeks ago in Washington, it was said that this was the necessary timeframe for Russia to be ready for real talks and a meeting between leaders. Ukraine is undoubtedly ready. But the only thing Russia is doing is investing in another war. All its signals point in that direction.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this this evening, quoted by Ukrainska Pravda . On August 18, during a meeting with European leaders in the United States, US President Donald Trump stated that "within a week or two" it would be known whether a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could be reached. On August 21, the American president stated that he would be able to assess the possibility of reaching peace in Ukraine "within two weeks."
On August 25, Trump said there would be "extremely grave consequences" for Russia and that he would "intervene forcefully" if a ceasefire agreement wasn't reached within the next two weeks. Zelensky said that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, currently on a four-day visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, "will back down again: it's his favorite sport."
"Everyone in the world has said that a ceasefire is necessary," the Ukrainian president concluded. "The only one who wants war is Russia. We expect no one to tolerate the prolongation of the war. We count on a strong position from the United States, Europe, and the G20 countries."
