Sayfullo Saipov , the Islamic bomber who killed eight people along a New York bike path on Halloween 2017 , faces the death penalty.

The 34-year-old man rammed his van into cyclists in Lower Manhattan, massacring eight bystanders including five Argentinian tourists and a Belgian , and was found guilty. Now he faces the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Of Uzbek origin but in the United States since 2010, he said he had acted in the name of ISIS . The attack, which took place near the World Trade Center , was the deadliest in New York City since September 11, 2001.

The 34-year-old was found guilty of 28 counts , including eight of murder "on behalf of ISIS", a crime that "carries the death penalty or life imprisonment", as underlined by the federal prosecutor's office in manhattan.

The last time anyone was executed in upstate New York was in 1963.
