Trump deploys the National Guard to Washington: "It's worse than Bogota and Baghdad."
"I will save the capital from crime, overrun by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, gangs of wild youths, drug-addicted maniacs and homeless people."(Handle)
Donald Trump announced the deployment of the National Guard to Washington. "I will save the capital of the United States from crime and squalor," he said at a White House press conference, announcing that local police would be "subject to the direct control of federal forces."
The US president called it a "historic action" to "take back our capital," invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, which places the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington under direct federal control. Trump also added that he would deploy the National Guard to help "restore law and order." And if necessary, he added, "I will also deploy the Army."
"You spit, we hit." This was the slogan he used to introduce his new anti-crime plan: "During arrests, criminals spit in the faces of police officers. They stand there and yell at them, an inch from their faces, and then start spitting back. So I told the police: 'Tell them that if you spit, we'll hit,' and they hit very hard."
He showed the media in the White House press room a series of graphs showing that Washington's crime rate is worse than that of several cities around the world, including Baghdad, Panama City, Brasilia and Bogota .
"Our capital has been overrun by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, gangs of unruly youths, drug-addicted maniacs, and homeless people, and we will not allow this to happen again, " he said. But according to official law enforcement statistics, the city's crime rate is expected to drop in 2025 and 2024 .
