Egypt repeatedly continues to commit human rights violations. And the United States is considering cutting his security assistance funds.

This was revealed by the New York Times citing a US senator and anonymous State Department officials.

Aid, 130 million dollars, had been temporarily blocked until January 31 pending Egypt to do more to protect the rights of dissidents, journalists, women and members of civil society, recalls the NYT. Since then, however, there have been no elements that have made the US State Department change its mind.

A final decision, it is specified, has not yet been made. But apparently the head of American diplomacy Antony J. Blinken would be oriented to divert the funds towards other national security priorities.

The 130 million, adds the newspaper, is only one tenth of the funds that the US gives to Egypt every year in this area. The country continues to buy military planes, ships and other equipment for billions of dollars: only this week the sale of C-130 cargoes and radars for 2.5 billion was announced, notes the NYT.

Military aid to Cairo had already been frozen in 2017 by then President Donald Trump. But they were released the following year.
