Republican leaders in the US House of Representatives have withdrawn a vote on a motion to limit President Donald Trump's ability to order military strikes against Iran , after it became clear that the resolution, pushed through by Democrats, was likely to pass .

"You don't have the votes," Democratic lawmakers chanted during a tense moment in the chamber, when Republicans attempted to postpone the vote until after lawmakers returned from their weeklong Memorial Day recess, according to American media reports. Approval of the measure would have been interpreted as an act of censure against Trump and the war he launched with Israel against Iran without any congressional authorization.

Opinion polls continue to indicate that a majority of Americans oppose the conflict , which has so far caused energy costs to rise and disrupted global supply chains. Trump and his allies have defended the conflict as necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
