Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's meeting on the war in Ukraine will take place in Alaska on August 15th . Trump announced the news on his social media account, Truth, around midnight Italian time.
"The long-awaited meeting between me and Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place next Friday, August 15th, in Alaska. Further details to follow," the tycoon wrote.
A location chosen after the Tsar's refusal to accept Rome, because Italy was considered "too pro-Ukrainian" .
Alaska is a territory the US purchased from Russia just over a century and a half ago. Putin will therefore return to the States ten years after his last visit , which took place in September 2015. The last meeting between Putin and an American president was in Geneva in 2021, before the invasion of Ukraine, when he met with Joe Biden.
Putin met Trump six times during the American president's first term, while he met Barack Obama nine times. Putin and George W. Bush met 28 times during the former American president's two terms, and the Kremlin leader was the first to call him after the September 11 attacks.
The meeting was welcomed by Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy , who expressed his enthusiasm. "Alaska has always been a bridge between nations, and today we remain a gateway for diplomacy, trade, and security in one of the world's most important regions. The world is watching, and Alaska stands ready to host this historic meeting ," he wrote on X.
Now, however, the Kremlin expects the next meeting between the two leaders to take place on Russian soil . Putin's advisor Yuri Ushakov stated: "Looking ahead, we should aim for the next meeting between the presidents to be held on Russian soil. The corresponding invitation has already been extended to the US president." Regarding the choice of Alaska, he stated that "Russia and the United States are neighbors, bordering each other. And it seems entirely logical that our delegation would simply cross the Bering Strait and that such an important and eagerly awaited summit of the leaders of the two countries would be held in Alaska."
