After yesterday's direct line with Vladimir Putin and the face-to-face meeting that degenerated into a clash at the White House, US President Donald Trump spoke on the phone with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
The call began around 4:00 p.m. Italian time and, at the end, Trump announced, with a post on his social Truth: "I just finished a great call with President Zelensky that lasted about an hour."
The conversation, the American president explained, was "largely about yesterday's call with President Putin to align both Russia and Ukraine in terms of requests and needs. We are on the right track and I will ask Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz to provide an accurate description of the points discussed."
For his part, after the meeting, Zelensky wrote in X: "Ukraine has accepted the end of attacks on energy and other civilian infrastructure" as "one of the first steps towards a complete end to the war."
The leader called the phone call with Trump "a positive, very substantive and frank conversation" in which the American president "shared the details of his conversation with Putin and the key issues discussed." "I supported this step and Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it," he added, referring to Russia's proposal for a partial truce.
"With President Donald Trump," the leader of Kiev concluded, "we agreed that Ukraine and the United States should continue to work together to achieve a real end to the war and lasting peace. We believe that together with America, with President Trump and under American leadership, lasting peace can be achieved this year."
Meanwhile, the Kremlin announced an upcoming meeting between Vladimir Putin and the US leader, which will be held in Saudi Arabia.
