Face to face between outgoing US President Joe Biden and his successor, President-elect Donald Trump.

The tycoon was received at the White House, in the Oval Office , as is customary after elections, for a sort of handover ceremony (in reality the official inauguration will take place next January.

"Politics is tough, it's often not a pretty world. But today is a beautiful day and I'm grateful for this smooth transition ," Trump said during the meeting, adding that he "very much appreciated" the president's invitation.

Biden responded with a simple “You’re welcome.” Then Trump and Biden – smiling and relaxed – cordially shook hands in front of the lit fireplace , in a completely different atmosphere than the televised debate last June, the last “direct” meeting between the two who since then have only crossed paths at the commemorations for September 11.

A clear change of pace compared to 2020 when Trump decided not to invite Biden, the winner of the elections, to the White House and unleashed a far from peaceful transition, culminating in the assault on Capitol Hill.
