Seven foreign tourists, including an Italian woman, died yesterday in a traffic accident between a pick-up truck and a passenger van in the US state of Idaho, along US Highway 20, in Fremont County, about 24 km from Yellowstone National Park.

According to reports, the accident involved Italian and Chinese tourists. After the impact - local authorities reported - both vehicles caught fire. The Italian Consulate in San Francisco is following the story.

Six of the victims were aboard the van, a Mercedes, carrying 14 people. The driver of the pickup, a Dodge Ram, also died. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 20 near Henry's Lake, a popular hiking, biking and fishing destination in eastern Idaho, about 15 miles from Yellowstone. The cause of the tragedy is under investigation. According to the Chinese agency Xinhua, cited by U.S. media, there are five Chinese dead and eight injured.
