Two American soldiers and their American interpreter were killed in Palmyra, central Syria, by members of the Islamic State who opened fire on a joint US-Syrian patrol.

The American president's response was immediate: "We will take revenge," said Donald Trump, after calling the victims "three great patriots" and expressing his condolences to their families.

The American military described the deadly attack as a "lone wolf" ambush, which also injured three other soldiers, according to the command that oversees US forces in the Middle East. The attacker, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth added, was killed by Syrians. The incident is the first of its kind since Islamist-led forces overthrew Bashar al-Assad's government and restored ties with the United States.
