Police in northern Switzerland said several people had been arrested and criminal proceedings had been opened in connection with the alleged death of a person in a “suicide pod”.

The Guardian, an English newspaper, reports this, emphasizing that the “Sarco” capsule, never used before, is designed to allow a person inside to press a button that injects nitrogen gas into the sealed chamber. The person should then fall asleep and die of suffocation within minutes. An illegal practice, even in Switzerland, where assisted suicide is authorized, but in specialized clinics.

The Swiss public prosecutor's office in the canton of Schaffhausen was informed by a law firm that an assisted suicide using the Sarco capsule took place on Monday near a cabin in the Merishausen forest.

Police added that "several people" had been taken into custody and prosecutors had opened an investigation on suspicion of incitement and complicity in suicide.
