Several Central American countries are on high alert today for the approaching tropical storm Julia that threatens to turn into a hurricane on the Caribbean Sea before landing in Nicaragua. This was announced by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States.

"Julia is expected to turn into a hurricane and a warning to that effect is in place in some parts of the Nicaraguan coast and for the islands of Providence and San Andres," the agency said.

In Bluefields, a major city on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, fishermen are sheltering their boats as locals rush to stock up and get cash.

Rains over the weekend could cause potentially deadly " flash floods and landslides " in Central America, the NHC warned.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has declared " maximum alert " in San Andres.

The storm is advancing at speeds of around 30 kilometers per hour with sustained winds of 93 km / h, according to the Colombian Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam).
