The Spanish government is calling on Italy to lift the border controls reintroduced on August 1 after the migrant crisis in Ceuta by Sunday, August 9, and warns that, otherwise, it will adopt "proportionate" response measures.
In an official statement, the Madrid government called the Italian decision "unfair, contrary to the EU's interests, and discriminatory against the Spanish population," arguing that it was adopted "without warning, unilaterally, and with spurious arguments that conform neither to the Schengen Borders Code nor to the truth."
