Russia and Ukraine "should return to peace negotiations". This was stated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a joint press conference with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, who is visiting Istanbul.

After the meeting, Erdogan himself said that Ukraine "deserves NATO entry".

The Turkish president, who since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine has proposed himself as mediator between Moscow and Kiev (Turkey also hosted the negotiating table, which later failed), also announced that in August he expects a visit from part of Vladimir Putin.

For his part, Zelensky explained that Ukraine wants to implement its peace plan and that Turkey "is ready to assume the leadership on

question".
