A revolution in the Church of England after 500 years of history: for the first time, a female bishop, Sarah Mullally, has been elected by the synod to the office of Archbishop of Canterbury, that is, to the role of primate of the national Church of the United Kingdom, whose nominal head is the reigning British monarch.

The appointment comes in response to a series of sex scandals, pedophilia scandals, and allegations of cover-ups that have engulfed several male prelates, including Mullaly's predecessor, who was forced to resign in recent months.
