Revolt at Latacunga prison, 15 inmates died

These are hours of great tension in Ecuador due to the revolt that broke out in one of the largest prisons in the country, that of Latacunga , which houses about 4,300 inmates .

During the revolt at least 15 prisoners died, another 20 were wounded. In the same structure, episodes of violence have already been recorded in the past: since February 2021 there have been seven massacres among prisoners, which have seen the death of over 400 people, killed with knives, beheaded, or victims of other barbarities.

Among the many reasons that animate the protests is the issue of overcrowding .

Recently, the government of President Guillermo Lasso launched a census of detainees to improve the living conditions of the inmates.
