Very high tension in Israel .

In Jerusalem , thousands of people attended the funeral of Al-Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, killed during a fire fight between Palestinian militants and an Israeli military unit, which took place two days ago in the Jenin refugee camp, but during the funeral procession violent clashes broke out .

The incidents began when the coffin came out of the hospital in Beit Hanina, an Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem, when officers prevented the reporter's coffin from being hoisted over the shoulder by a group of people. The coffin, under the charge of the agents, almost fell to the ground .

For their part, the Israelis explained that the police charged in response to a throwing of stones and other objects at the officers .

But what happened - filmed by smartphones and cameras - went around the world, arousing indignant reactions .

Starting with the White House , which defined the images of the clashes as "disturbing". Spokeswoman Jen Psaki expressed the Biden administration's "regret" and called the violence "an intrusion into a peaceful procession".

"The European Union is upset" , commented the High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell , condemning "the disproportionate use of force and the disrespectful behavior of the Israeli police towards the participants in the funeral procession".

Condemnation also in Italy, where the secretary of the Democratic Party Enrico Letta wrote on Twitter that "no explanation can justify this destruction ".
