Five police officers have been relieved of their duties following the murder of a 28-year-old woman outside the police station in the suburb of Agioi Anargyroi, north of Athens, on April 1st.

Among the suspended officers are the station commander and the emergency dispatcher who was on the phone with the victim when she was killed.

According to Greek media reconstructions, Kyriaki Griva, 28, went to the police station on the evening of April 1st because she feared for her life after spotting her ex-partner - who was prevented from approaching her under a restraining order - who was loitering near his home.

The woman remained inside the Agioi Anargyroi police station for eight minutes and after leaving she called the police emergency switchboard to ask for a car to escort her home.

In the phone call, reported by the Greek media, the switchboard agent told the woman that "the police car is not a taxi" and that he could not escort her home from where she was, but could send a squad car directly to the the woman's home.

But just as the conversation was taking place, the ex-partner caught up with the woman outside the police station and stabbed her to death several times.

The affair has sparked deep indignation on social media and in the country's television debate.

The head of the Athens Prosecutor's Office, Antonis Eleftherianos, has ordered a full investigation into "possible shortcomings on the part of the police officers on duty at the time of the tragedy".
