An investigation for "corruption and money laundering" involves Qatar, the country that hosts the World Cup, and agitates the EU institutions, also affecting Italy.

In fact, the Belgian police arrested the Greek socialist MEP and vice-president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili in Brussels. But also involved in the investigation are Pier Antonio Panzeri , former MEP of the Socialists and Democrats, and Luca Visentini , head of the European trade unions for several years. Both were stopped.

A warrant was also executed in the province of Bergamo against Maria Colleoni , 67, and Silvia Panzeri , 38, Panzeri's wife and daughter respectively.

According to the Brussels prosecutor's office and according to leaks published by the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, "a Gulf country" (identified precisely with Qatar) would have attempted to influence the economic and political decisions of the European Parliament, " by paying large sums of money or offering gifts of large entity to third parties who hold important political or strategic positions within the European Parliament".
