Moments of terror at Donald Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach. The former president was playing when gunfire was heard nearby, to which the Secret Service responded . "The president is safe," his campaign immediately announced. "I'm fine. Nothing will slow me down. I will never give up," he said.
The gunfire triggered a lockdown of the property, where the Secret Service and the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office are now investigating. A backpack, an AK-47 semi-automatic weapon and a Go-Pro camera were found in the area, CNN reports. A 'person of interest' has reportedly been detained and is currently being questioned. The car he was driving is now being searched by authorities.
The shooting near Donald Trump appears to be an “apparent assassination attempt,” the FBI says. It’s also unclear what security measures will be taken at Mar-a-Lago, where Trump lives with Melania. Details of the incident are still preliminary. According to reports, one of the first 911 calls was about a shooting between two individuals outside Trump’s golf club. Sources later told CNN that the exchange of gunfire was likely with the Secret Service. It’s not yet clear whether the suspect opened fire, or whether the shots were fired by the Secret Service to neutralize him in advance after intercepting him.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been briefed on the incident and will continue to be updated. The president and vice president are “relieved” that Trump is OK. “I’m glad he’s OK. Violence has no place in America,” Harris added.
The shooting near Trump comes two months after the attempted assassination of the former president in Butler, Pennsylvania, by 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, who was killed at the scene by a sniper.
