"From August, 30% tariffs on EU countries": Trump's announcement
The US president "threatens" Brussels: "Tariffs will double in case of retaliation." Von der Leyen: "Shocking, countermeasures soon."Donald Trump (Ansa)
Donald Trump posted on Truth a letter he sent to the EU, in which he announced 30% tariffs on European countries, starting August 1st.
The US president also threatened Europe, warning Brussels not to retaliate against the United States on trade, otherwise tariffs will be doubled.
Trump's letter, addressed to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, cites the "trade deficit disparity due to tariff and non-tariff trade barriers" as the reason for the 30% tariff.
The percentage is well above what the EU expected, especially after Trump recently said that Brussels "treated the United States well."
"We take note of the letter sent by US President Trump," commented European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen . "Imposing 30 percent tariffs on EU imports would disrupt key transatlantic supply chains, to the detriment of businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic," she said. She added: "We remain ready to continue working towards an agreement by August 1st. At the same time, we will take all necessary measures to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if necessary."
At the Italian level, according to estimates by the Cgia of Mestre, the most penalised regions will be those of Southern Italy, starting with Sardinia , which has a lower index of diversification of its exports.
