Vladimir Putin discussed the outcome of the August summit in Alaska with Donald Trump with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders. Speaking at the SCO in Tianjin, the Kremlin leader said he "appreciated the efforts" of China and India to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, "which was not triggered by the invasion but by the coup in Kiev supported by Ukraine's Western allies and the West's attempts to drag Kiev into NATO."

To resolve this, "the causes must be addressed and the security balance restored. Russia adheres to the principle that no country can guarantee its security at the expense of others ."
