We will represent all Hungarians. The country has no time to waste, and I ask the President to grant me the mandate to form a new government as soon as possible. Hungary has major problems to face; it has been betrayed and devastated.
Words from Peter Magyar , in the first press conference after the elections that ended the era of Viktor Orban .
The newly elected prime minister promised to do everything possible to ensure "a new era" for his country: "The Hungarian people did not vote for a simple change of government, but for a complete change of regime," he explained.
In Europe, he added, "I am committed to pursuing a constructive policy; we will seek compromises on the most sensitive issues. The EU is a complex, bureaucratic organization, prone to compromise. I'm sure there will be debates, but we won't go to Brussels to fight for the sake of it, only to then accuse Brussels of being a stepmother and having to stop us."
The Kremlin, which with Orban's defeat has lost Vladimir Putin's most loyal ally in Europe, has expressed iciness: "Russia will not congratulate the election winner, Peter Magyar, because Hungary is an unfriendly country that supports sanctions against Moscow," said spokesman Dmitry Peskov . Speaking about the relationship between Putin and Orban, Peskov stated that theirs "has never been a friendship, we simply had a dialogue with him."
