A church is once again the scene of a shooting in the United States. A month after the attack in Minneapolis , in which two children died, this time a Mormon church in Michigan was targeted . A massacre was nearly committed because hundreds of people were attending mass . The provisional toll stands at one dead and nine injured, including children .

The attacker , a 40-year-old man who lived in a nearby town, drove his car into the church and then started shooting with an assault rifle . He was neutralized shortly after by the police , but still managed to set the building on fire .

The images taken by some residents and published on social media show, in fact, dense columns of smoke rising from the church in Grand Blanc , 80 kilometers from Detroit.

Firefighters managed to put out the flames after about an hour.

It is not clear what the motive for the attack was, nor is the identity of the killer known at this time.

For Donald Trump, this is " yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States ," after Minneapolis. "This epidemic of violence in our country must end immediately," the president said in a post on Truth.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Democrat, condemned the violence "anywhere, but especially in a place of worship." Attorney General Pam Bondi called the church attack "heartbreaking and appalling."

FBI Director Kash Patel also reacted: "This is a cowardly and criminal act. Our prayers are with the victims and their families during this terrible tragedy."
