At least 15 protesters and one member of the security forces have been killed during protests in Iran , which began a week ago due to the dire economic situation and have taken place in 174 locations across the country, with rallies reported in 60 cities and 25 provinces.
The figures come from Iran International, a London-based opposition media outlet. At least 44 people were reportedly shot and injured by live ammunition or pellet guns fired by Iranian forces during the protests.
The events in Iran have triggered reactions from the international community, with rallies and solidarity demonstrations organized in many capitals, including London and Berlin. "We are closely following the evolving situation across Iran, with demonstrations reflecting the demands of many Iranians. We are concerned by the reported deaths and injuries and urge Iranian security forces to exercise utmost restraint in managing the peaceful protests," said EU High Representative Kaja Kallas.
According to Iranian spiritual leader Ali Khamenei, "the protests against economic problems are justified, but those who, provoked by enemy mercenaries, shouted slogans against Islam and the Islamic Republic must be put back in their place."
