Armita Geravand, the 16-year-old who ended up in a coma 28 days ago after being beaten by Tehran subway security following an argument because she wasn't wearing a headscarf, has died.

The girl was in the intensive care unit of the Fajr hospital in the Iranian capital. Witnesses present in the Tehran subway, interviewed by the Guardian, said that the moral police had struck her violently, causing an intracranial hemorrhage.

Iranian officials denied any physical contact with the 16-year-old, claiming the teenager fainted due to a drop in blood pressure and hit her head. Version denied by surveillance camera footage.

Last October 5, Shahin Amadi, the mother of the 16-year-old, was arrested after shouting at the security forces because they had not allowed her to visit her daughter in hospital.

The case is reminiscent of that of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian arrested for not wearing the hijab correctly and who died while in police custody on September 16 last year. His death sparked nationwide anti-government protests, which continued for months.
