The New York Times writes that Khamenei suffered from an intestinal obstruction , with severe stomach pains and a high fever. For this he underwent surgery and "is better and resting," some sources say.
Born in 1939, Ali Khamenei is 83 years old and assumed the position of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic in 1989 after the death of Ayatollah Komeini.
He was also president of Iran during the 1980s.
