The Atomic Energy Agency of Iran announced today that the country has started construction of a new nuclear power plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

Construction work on the 300-megawatt plant will take seven years and cost between $1.5 and $2 billion. Iran also operates a nuclear power plant in Bouchehr , in the far south of the country, with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts.

"Originally - according to Mohammad Eslami, the head of the atomic energy organization - the plant was supposed to be built by a French company which backed down on "its commitments" after the Islamic Revolution of 1979" .
