The government of Saudi Arabia has decided that women will also be able to drive taxis.

It is, underlined the spokesmen of the monarchy, a further step "within the new vision of Prince Mohammed bin Salman", who promised numerous reforms between now and 2030, in the name of discontinuity with the past.

In particular, Saudi women will now be able to attend one of the 18 driving schools authorized to grant the license to drive taxis, after a final exam, based in the main cities of the Kingdom, including Jeddah and the capital Riyadh.

The government announcement - local media reported - was welcomed by the women of the country, who will thus see their job opportunities widen.

Only in 2017 were Saudi women allowed to get their driver's license and drive their own car. Since then, nearly 175,000 driving licenses have been issued to women.

The Vision 2030 political strategy aims to increase the role of women in public life: according to data from the Saudi Institute for Statistics, women's participation in work has risen from 19% in 2016 to 33% in 2020.
