Haiti's international airport has been temporarily closed after gangs opened fire on a Spirit Airlines flight landing in Port-Au-Prince from Fort Lauderdale, United States. One crew member was slightly injured.
Today's violence near the airport occurred as the new prime minister, businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, was being sworn in , whose selection by the Transitional Presidential Council has been criticized by some Haitian leaders, including his predecessor, Garry Conille, who called his appointment "illegal."
Flight 951 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Port-au-Prince was diverted and landed safely in Santiago , American Airlines said, adding that an inspection found damage to the plane consistent with gunfire. The airline has temporarily suspended service to Haiti.
