There are now just minutes left until the departure from Tunis of the Global Sumud Flotilla, the humanitarian mission headed for Gaza.
Also on board one of the boats are two Sardinian activists: José Nivoi, a Genoese man of island origins and a leading figure in the port collective CALP, and Marco Loi, from Villaputzu.
The flotilla is made up of 18 ships that set sail from various Mediterranean ports—Greece, Sicily, Tunisia, and Barcelona—aiming to reunite at sea and reach the Gaza Strip. Their holds and decks are loaded with humanitarian aid: tons of food and medicine destined for a population in desperate conditions.
The mission was halted due to a technical issue that prevented departure from Augusta, Sicily. The delay, however, did not deter organizers, who confirmed the operation would begin from alternative landing ports.
In the last few hours, however, tensions have increased: several boats anchored in Tunisia's harbour have been hit by drones, causing fires on board that have made the departure phase even more complex.
