He's never forgotten his roots, cherishing them and celebrating them at every opportunity. Mirko Usai, 42 , from Cagliari and living in the United Kingdom for nine years , is celebrating a major milestone today: his restaurant, Rustica, is among the finalists for the best restaurants in Wales.

The restaurant, opened in Monmouth , embodies the same Sardinian soul as its owner. The decision to open the restaurant was made a year ago, after years of experience gained away from the island. An adventure born from a deep passion and a bond with Sardinia that has never been broken and is now beginning to bring great satisfaction: Rustica is among the finalists of the 2026 UK Italian Awards in the Best Restaurant in Wales category. The final will be held on March 30th in London, but Usai's heart is already overflowing with joy.

"For me, this recognition is a source of great pride, because it represents work built far from Sardinia, but bringing the identity, tradition, and flavors of our land to the table every day," says Usai. In his small world, everything speaks Sardinian: from the dishes to the products, right down to the Quattro Mori flag that stands proudly in the restaurant and welcomes customers.

And as she prepares for the grand final, her thoughts inevitably return to the island. "This milestone has a special meaning for me: every day I share my homeland, its recipes, and its traditions." And judging by the results, she's doing it in the best possible way.
