The Trump administration is considering helping Tehran access up to $30 billion to secure a return to the negotiating table and build a civilian nuclear program, easing sanctions and freeing up billions of dollars in tied-up Iranian funds.
Four sources quoted by CNN as saying that key U.S. and Middle Eastern players have been talking to the Iranians behind the scenes, including during the military conflict. Discussions have continued this week after a ceasefire deal was struck.
Trump administration officials have confirmed that several preliminary proposals, still in the development stage, have been developed to restart the dialogue with Tehran. The cornerstone of each hypothesis is the US demand for an Iranian commitment to “zero enrichment” of uranium, considered non-negotiable. According to sources cited by CNN, at least one of the drafts would include significant incentives for Iran, including access to frozen financial resources. The contents of the proposal were reportedly at the center of a confidential meeting, lasting hours, between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and some Gulf partners, held at the White House last Friday.
