Two Italians have died after being hit by an avalanche in the Swiss Alps. The accident occurred on Pigne d'Arolla, a peak which culminates at almost 3,800 metres, between the Matterhorn and the Grand Combin. A third climber however survived. Swiss rescuers responded to the scene with an Air Glaciers helicopter.

The victims are two athletes resident in the province of Lecco: from initial information, a 30-year-old and a 50-year-old.

The cause of the avalanche remains to be established.
