A car plowed into a crowd in Los Angeles, injuring at least 30 people. NBC reports that a driver was knocked unconscious. That's the initial story, at least. It later emerged that the driver was wounded by a gunshot.

The vehicle, first in line with the crowd, struck a food vendor. The accident occurred at 2 a.m. local time on West Santa Monica Boulevard, near a music venue.

"We've received reports of a gunshot wound to one of the patients," said Captain Adam VanGerpern of the Los Angeles Fire Department, adding that the ongoing investigation is aimed at clarifying what happened. And it appears to be the person who was driving.

Of the injured , seven are in critical condition, six are in serious condition, and ten are in fair condition. Seven patients refused to be taken to the hospital after being examined on the spot.
