After many years in Cambodia there is one death caused by bird flu.

From the information provided by the health authorities, the victim is an 11-year-old girl: she fell ill on February 16, had a cough and sore throat. Admitted to hospital, she was subjected to tests which confirmed her positivity to H5N1, the avian flu, and despite the treatments she died a few days later.

The disease typically spreads from birds to humans through direct contact. Globally, according to WHO, there have been more than 450 fatal cases since 2003.

The World Health Organization has called for greater vigilance while recalling that the risk of transmission of the virus from birds to mammals is low.
