A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck northeastern Japan in the Tohoku region at 4:53 p.m. local time (9:53 a.m. GMT).
The earthquake had its epicenter in the sea off the coast of Sanriku Prefecture, at a depth of 10 kilometers, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported, which issued a tsunami warning for the prefectures of Iwate and Hokkaido.
A tsunami warning was issued shortly thereafter, with the possibility of waves up to 3 meters. Tsunami warnings were also issued for the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture, as well as for Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures, with waves up to 1 meter expected. Evacuations were ordered.
