The French baguette , with its crunchy crust and soft crumb, one of the quintessential symbols of Parisian everyday life , has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .

The decision came after the meeting of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee in Rabat, Morocco. In this case, the organization rewarded the artisan skills of the bakers and the culture linked to this bakery product .

The race towards recognition was announced by the president of the body of Unesco world experts, Pier Luigi Petrillo, in his speech in New York on the occasion of the conference on the future of the Mediterranean diet promoted by the Italian representation at the United Nations. «From traditional Mexican cuisine to French gastronomy, from the art of Neapolitan pizza chefs to quarrying and truffle hunting, from the typical dishes of Korea and Senegal, from Belgian beer, to traditional breads from Azerbaijan and Armenia to Tunisian and Moroccan couscous , from Turkish to Arabic coffee, up to Ukrainian borsch - Petrillo underlined - UNESCO recognizes every year an increasing number of food and agricultural traditions as cultural heritage of humanity, thus reaffirming the close relationship between food and culture».
