The competitive spirit is not lacking, but what animates the small Sardinian delegation to the European Transplant and Dialysis Games , which begin on Sunday in Oxford, England, is a nobler purpose: to demonstrate that there is life and (and there is sport) after transplantation and promote the choice of organ donation.
Among the 400 athletes from 25 nations who for seven days will compete in various disciplines (29 of which Italians), the Sardinians will be the multi-titled cyclist from Settimo, Stefano Caredda , Gianni Fadda in running, Enrico Pitzalis in tennis, Paolo Perra and the president of the Prometeo association, Pino Argiolas , in bowls (Petanque specialty).
"Let's go to the memory of Pino Canu , the friend president of Asnet who had organized the Sardinian edition of the games with us and who taught that even a small company like the Sardinian one can be capable of great things", said Argiolas. , recalling that "the goal is to testify to the need to decrease opposition (those who do not agree to organ donation, ed ) which have risen to 38-40%, to relaunch the choice of the donation that saves life" .
Marcello Tidore , director of ASL 8, calls sportsmen together : “It would be nice for all athletes to declare themselves donors when they renew their identity cards. A small gesture that prevents the choice from having to be made, perhaps by parents at a time when one cannot be lucid ".
Meanwhile, ASL, Regional Transplant Center and voluntary associations are teaming up to win on the field and in the race to increase the chances of transplantation.
