The new legislature , the XIX, begins today. And the number one stage is the election of the presidents of the Chamber and Senate : for the first the convocation is at 10 am, chaired by Ettore Rosato of Iv; for the second at 10.30, with an assembly led by Liliana Segre, senator for life.

The next step will be the task entrusted by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to form the new government . The name of Giorgia Meloni seems obvious, she will probably be convened next Monday, which would therefore become the first woman to head the government in the history of the Republic.

But how does the vote in the two houses of Parliament work ?

In the Chamber , the 400 deputies elect the president by secret ballot. The candidate, to pass to the first call, must obtain at least 267 votes, therefore a two-thirds majority of the assembly. Same quota required for the second and third ballots even if in this case the blank ballots are considered among the votes cast. From the fourth ballot on, however, it will be sufficient to receive the support of the absolute majority of voters (201 votes, if all 400 deputies vote).

In the Senate (200 elected senators) there are different rules: in the first two votes, an absolute majority of the members of the assembly is required to be elected president (104 votes, also considering the six senators for life). In the event of a third ballot, an absolute majority of the votes of those present is sufficient, counting the blank ballots among the votes. Without a majority in the third ballot, the president of the Senate will be chosen by a ballot between the two candidates who obtained the most votes in the third ballot.
