The prices of Sardinian IGP lamb in the past season were the highest in the last 30 years : 5.54 euros per kg (paid to the shepherd by live weight) and 6.80 euros per kg during the Christmas and Easter holidays. The total turnover was 62 million euros for consumption , of which 15 million from exports.

This is what emerges from the annual report of the Consortium for the protection of IGP lamb of Sardinia (Contas), according to which IGP branded lambs have also grown, in total 784,983, with a + 4% compared to the 2020/2021 season which recorded 753,938. Now the program "Agnello di Sardegna PGI: good, healthy, guaranteed" will start, financed under the tender relating to the Enjoy EU European agri-food promotion programs with promotional actions inside and outside the borders of Europe.

"Contas - explains the president of the Consorzio Battista Cualbu -, presented a project that would focus on the objectives of the European Green Deal, emphasizing the concepts of sustainability in our supply chain. Another point was to underline the high standards of safety and quality, as well as the diversity and traditional aspects of the supply chain. The call awarded us € 481,000 in funding for promotional actions ".

"The Igp denomination - explains the director of Contas Alessandro Mazzette - has reached 5100 recognized companies (4,798 members and 302 non-members) in addition to 25 slaughtering companies and 16 portioning companies".

The province with the largest number of companies is Nuoro with 32% of shareholders, followed by Sassari with 28%, Cagliari with 21% and Oristano with 19%. Within the Consortium there is a good presence of the female component with 919 women (19%). In 2021, 757,000 PGI lambs were slaughtered, representing 77% of the entire regional production and 64% of the national production referred to suckling lamb. While, if we consider the year 2021/2022 (September 2021-August 2022), 784,983 PGI heads were certified out of 963,646 lambs slaughtered in total in Sardinia with a percentage that exceeds 81.5%.
