The process to allow the port of Sant'Antioco to enter the Port System Authority of the sea of Sardinia has officially started in the Region. At the institutional table at the headquarters of the regional city planning and local authorities, led by Quirico Sanna, the management of the regional departments for Transport and Public Works, the Regional State Property, the Cagliari Maritime Direction and the Port Commander participated of Sant'Antioco, as well as the Presidency of the Port System Authority of the Sardinian Sea, with Massimo Deiana, and the General Manager Natale Ditel. Also present were the mayor of Sant'Antioco Ignazio Locci and the municipal councilor for urban planning Francesco Garau.

The first citizen talks about a “historical page”: “The Sardinia Region has finally taken charge of our request, starting the process for the entry of our port into the Sardinian system. A great goal which, once achieved, will mean looking at our port within regional and national logic, with investment funds that will allow it to definitively become a reference port for the entire surrounding area. This follows the commitment that we have made in recent years to succeed: last November we approved the request to the Region and today we collect the result. In fact, for now, ours is the only island port outside the scope of the Sardinian port system. Now, faced with the current scenario, it makes no sense that the port of Sant'Antioco remains outside the system Authority and continues to remain under the aegis of the Sardinia Region. The Antiochense airport plays a fundamental role for the whole South West of Sardinia and I thank the Region, in particular Councilor Sanna, for having accepted the request of our community ".

The municipal administration in 2019 approved the acknowledgment of the "Variation to the Port Regulatory Plan", which provides for the subdivision of the port areas, safeguarding fishing activity, commercial production and allowing ample space for shipbuilding and berths pleasure boats, as well as the services they will provide from the connection to the city center.

“This planning - explains the commissioner Garau - will be the starting point for the development of the port. It has always been our intention to guarantee a future in the name of economic development for the port areas of Sant'Antioco through their conversion through the enhancement of the tourism sector and the development of shipbuilding, without forgetting the professional practice of fishing and the residual activity. of the salt industry. And to achieve all this we now have a valid ally and the certainty that Sant'Antioco will enter the regional system, guaranteeing the tourist development of the territory and also favoring maritime traffic ".

Sant'Antioco, underlined the regional councilor Quirico Sanna, “will become a port of national interest. The characteristics of the Antiochense port are not those of a small port: we believe, in fact, that the strategic position of Sant'Antioco can support the port of Cagliari. The political will of the Region is all there ".
