Giancarlo Giorgetti, disavowed by the sovereignists of his own government, ends up in the sights of the opposition . Pd, M5s, Italia Viva and Azione have requested in a letter to the president of the Budget Commission the "urgent and necessary" hearing of the Minister of Economy on the Stability Pact and the ESM.

After the approval of the new EU Stability and Growth Pact and after the rejection of the ratification of the ESM in Italy in the Chamber , a briefing by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, is necessary and urgent , to be carried out in the Commission by her already chaired during the examination of the 2024 Budget Law", we read in the document.

«Last 20 December, after months of negotiation – it is reconstructed – the Finance Ministers of the European Union unanimously signed an agreement on the revision of the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP), for whose definitive approval it will be necessary to wait for the vote of the European Parliament, before the end of the legislature. In the aftermath of this significant achievement, whatever the judgment on the merits, the Chamber of Deputies, in its session on 21 December, with a vote of the Assembly, rejected the bill which authorizes the ratification of the Agreement amending the Treaty establishing the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). In light of these significant events, we believe an information from the Minister of Economy and Finance, the Hon., is necessary and urgent. Giancarlo Giorgetti".

Italy is the only one of the twenty countries to have rejected the modification of the ESM , and yesterday Giorgetti himself said: " I was interested in the ESM being approved, but it was not in the air ." Faced with the opposition's requests for resignation, the minister glossed over: " I'll decide on my resignation ," he said, taking the ironic reply from IV deputy Luigi Marattin . «It seems right to me that he decides, at least on his resignation. Since he doesn't decide anything about the rest ."

The minister has indicated his willingness to speak in the commission next Wednesday, 27 December, but only to talk about the budget law, and not about the Stability Pact or the ESM as requested by the opposition. There is an openness to reporting on these issues in other sessions.

In the morning Salvini's speech, which claims the "coherence" of the League's choice: "There is no Italian case in Europe. Our economy is solid, we are growing more than the French and Germans. The ESM was a useless, unused, outdated and harmful tool. An Italian pensioner or worker would have had to pay to save a German bank , so Parliament exercised its democratic right to reject a useless and harmful instrument and the spread fell. We did what we had to do to defend the jobs and savings of Italians."
