The olive tree in Sardinia: a new initiative to grow the culture and economy of oil

“The olive tree in Sardinia: critical issues and synergies”: this is the theme of the conference scheduled for tomorrow from 4.30 pm at the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce of Sassari, in via Roma, on the initiative of the newly formed Confraternity of the Olive Tree of North West Sardinia .
As the organizers underline in the introduction, "the cultivation of the olive tree is not only an economic fact, but has determined over the centuries a contribution to the Sardinian society and culture. The fresh oil from the mill, the olives cured in brine with bay leaves and fennel are part of the gastronomic tradition of the whole Sardinia, with a territory of particular election in the north-west of the island".
The Confraternity of the Olive Tree of North West Sardinia, as highlighted by its president Alessandro Arru, « was born with the intention of collaboration and of taking an interest in the cultural aspects, in a broad sense, connected with the culture of the olive tree and the products derived from it. Far from imagining any form of competition or substitution for other realities, but integrative in a participatory way with those who are interested and involved, even professionally, in this culture». «The interests», adds Arru, «range from landscape and architectural aspects to history and art connected to the olive tree and its products, from its use in traditional medicine to pharmacological and medical aspects, from the promotion of the use of extra virgin olive oil to the combination of that with the right characteristics for dishes, in short with everything that can promote and encourage knowledge of the cultivation and culture of the olive tree in all its aspects ».
Already from this first action the Confraternita dell'Ulivo invites and shares with the trade associations, the administrations, Coldiretti, Città dell'Olio, the Chamber of Commerce and all the major players, without neglecting a special attention for consumers and all citizens, including the University, schools and training institutes, to think of a careful strategy to determine the olive tree and oil as assets of territorial development.
