The ministry's rejection of funding for the film on Regeni becomes a case in point: three questions are raised.
Democratic Party, +Europa, and AVS: "Political choice or censorship, Giuli should explain the exclusion."Per restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
"A political, not an artistic, choice." A decision that goes "beyond science fiction," a "censorship that denies the search for truth." The failure to publicly fund the documentary on Giulio Regeni becomes a case and reaches the Chamber of Deputies, with questions from the Democratic Party, Più Europa, and Avs demanding answers from Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli.
The documentary "Giulio Regeni, Tutto il Male del Mondo," directed by Simone Manetti and winner of the 2026 Nastro della Legalità award, retraces the story of the Italian researcher kidnapped, tortured, and killed in Egypt in 2016, still without a motive or a culprit. A story that has shocked and outraged Italy but which, according to experts at the Ministry of Culture, is undeserving of the funding provided to support cinematographic works, as denounced by Domenico Procacci of "Fandango," who produced the work together with Mario Mazzarotto's "Ganesh."
Chiara Braga, Democratic Party leader in the Chamber of Deputies, called for "immediate responses," announcing the question, which was co-signed by Secretary Elly Schlein and members of the Culture Committee. "We're talking about a work of clear civic and cultural value. Is it a political consideration that led to its exclusion from public support?"
The documentary has already been released in theaters, and 76 Italian universities have joined Senator Elena Cattaneo's initiative to screen it. "And yet," insists Riccardo Magi, secretary of Più Europa, " in the Italy of Giorgia Meloni and Alessandro Giuli, it is being denied public funding because it is of little cultural interest. And there's no point in even making comparisons with other works that have been funded. At this point, there are two possibilities," Magi continues, "either the ministry commission is completely incompetent, or there was a political mandate. In either case, it is so serious and incredible that Minister Giuli has an obligation to clarify it in Parliament." The third question will be presented by Angelo Bonelli, MP for AVS, who speaks bluntly of a gag.
