He was one of the protagonists of the birth and growth of Europe, a direct collaborator in the secretariat of the then Prime Minister Antonio Segni, from 1955 to 1958 until his appointment as an official of the EEC.

Francesco Fresi was present at the signing of the Treaties of Rome in 1957. Born in Arzachena 94 years ago, official, manager and finally member of the various consultative committees, Fresi is the author of the book "The European Union 1950 - 2022 - From the Schumann Plan to the torments of today". He will present his work on Tuesday 21 November at 5pm in the Virgilio Mura room of the Department of Law, in viale Mancini 5 in Sassari.

The meeting is sponsored by the Antonio Segni Foundation.

Francesco Fresi gives a lucid and timely account of the most important stages of the birth and evolution of the European Community: from the miracle of the Treaties of Rome with the first creation of the CECA (the Coal and Steel Economic Community) to the difficult negotiations for membership of Ireland, Denmark, Norway and the long history of the relationship with Great Britain, which resulted in Brexit. A compelling book, with an almost novelistic rhythm, also enriched by the stories of the great protagonists of the history of Europe: Monnet, Shuman, Adenauer, Spaak, De Gasperi, Bech, Beyen, Luns, Hallstein and of course Antonio Segni who as President of the Council on 25 March 1957 he placed his signature at the bottom of the Treaties of Rome.

Tuesday's meeting, promoted in collaboration with the Law department of the University of Sassari and its European Documentation Centre, will be opened by greetings from the Rector Gavino Mariotti, the Director Michele Comenale Pinto and the President of the Segni Foundation, Mario Segni . The works will be introduced by Silvia Sanna and Silvia Angioi, professors of International Law at the University of Sassari. Dialogue with the author Marco Tarantola, conclusions entrusted to Paolo Fois, professor emeritus of International Law at the University of Sassari.
