Inspired by the cartoons of the characters created by the cartoonist Charles Addams, "The Addams Family" was born in the 60s, the black and white television series first aired on the American television network ABC and then also in Italy.
And it is precisely from this that the Compagnia della Corona is inspired by choosing to stage, for lovers of black humor, a very amusing musical comedy born from the pen and inspiration of the authors Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice and Andrew Lippa and which saw the 2010 Broadway debut with Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane as the bizarre spouses Morticia and Gomez Addams.

The Italian reinterpretation, directed by Salvatore Sito, back from a triumphant Don Pasquale at the Coccia Theater in Novara, will be staged in absolute regional premiere tomorrow, Sunday 22 February, at the Doglio Theater with a double show, the matinee at 11 and a afternoon recital at 4 pm.

The plot is well known and tells of the meeting of the Addams Family with another absolutely normal, the Beinekes, in view of the engagement of Wednesday Addams who, once grown up, falls in love with Lucas.

The idea of getting married worries her a lot: what reaction will her mother have to the news?

Better to confide everything to his father and make sure he keeps it a secret.

An invitation to dinner at the Addams house and the traditional "Game" will lead the two families to get to know each other better, finding themselves confessing unspeakable secrets in a hectic evening full of misunderstandings and uncomfortable truths that will change everyone's lives.

The cast is very rich and includes among the protagonists Andrea Rodi (Gomez Addams), Barbara Corradini (Morticia), Antea Galli (Mercoledì), Pasquale Gramegna (Pugsley) Guido Turchi (Uncle Fester), Barbara Bertoni (Grandma Addams), Luca Gallo (Lurch), Luca Mazzamurro (Mal Beineke), Erika del Re (Alice Beineke) and Mattia Baldacci (Lucas Beineke).

During a break between rehearsals for the impressive show, we asked Salvatore Sito a few questions.

Why the choice to re-propose the Addams Family in a musical?

«I wanted to stage a show that would allow us to tell how difficult and at the same time important it is to feel part of a family. That would allow you to do it in a nice, light-hearted, but also fascinating way. The Addams Family is all of this. Although it is a brilliant comedy, it helps to reflect on the importance of going beyond prejudices to be able to welcome diversity. He explains that what is "normal" depends on the point of view and that love is a universal feeling, you can even fall in love with the moon. All very current topics. Treated in such a way as to be appreciated by anyone, regardless of age».

How did the public react during your Italian tour?

«I remember a thunderous applause, on the evening of the debut, just a few seconds into the opera. "La Famiglia" had simply appeared, and the public immediately wanted to show us their enthusiasm. This made me understand that we had built an effective aesthetic line, but also that those characters so iconic, so characterized are still today, over eighty years after their first appearances, much loved. In general, I noticed that the public enjoys it a lot, without accusing moments of decline».

What will fans of the American television series of this bizarre family find in your show?

«The entire set-up is inspired by the 1960s television series. We have therefore chosen to characterize costumes, furnishings and hairstyles using the style and aesthetics of that era, but not only. We have removed the colour, except for the rare moments in which it takes on a specific dramaturgical function, imagining our audience as a large family, sitting in front of a television from the 60s, rigorously in black and white. In this regard, I would like to applaud the creative team that assisted me in the creation of this imaginary: Davide Amadei (scenes), Silvia Lumes (costumes), Enea Bucchi (make-up), Simone Montella (video-design), Silvia Raschi (choreography), Rosa Sito (musical direction), Nicola Pacetta (audio-design)».

A lot of effort to assemble the production, but how much fun did you have during the months of preparation before the 2020 debut?

«Very much, because the show is really funny, but also because an extremely solid and united working group has been created, a real family».

What plans does the Compagnia della Corona have for the future?

First of all, we are very happy to make our debut in Sardinia at the Teatro Doglio, a fascinating place that I would like to thank for the wonderful welcome it has given us. The Company is working to ensure that "The Addams Family" can arrive in theaters throughout Italy and has already put in the pipeline new projects for the next theater season which will be revealed in due course».
