A tribute to the revolutionary saxophonist and founder of Weather Report, Wayne Shorter, performed by an extraordinary quartet of great contemporary Italian jazz musicians: "Shorter's Vision" is the new live event in the 2025 season at Bflat in Cagliari, scheduled for Friday the 17th starting at 9:30 PM. Acclaimed Sardinian jazz musicians Laura J Marras and Alessandro Di Liberto will perform alongside two other exceptional artists, Enzo Zirilli and Alessandro Maiorino.
Wayne Shorter was not among the fathers of modern jazz in the immediate post-war period, but in 1958 he entered a deeply avant-garde scene .
Infatuated with the sonic complexity of the bebop genre, he first gained attention as a tenor saxophonist in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, among the leading exponents of the much more dynamic hard bop style. After experimenting with modal jazz, the young Shorter joined Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, a training ground that would lead him to remain with Davis even after the Quintet's demise, participating in the jazz-fusion masterpieces "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew." But 1970 marked the beginning of his most celebrated chapter, with the creation of the iconic Weather Report with keyboardist Joe Zawinul and bassist Miroslav Vitouš, giving rise to a group that in the years to come would include Jaco Pastorius, Peter Erskine, and Omar Hakim and explore funk, Latin and ethnic influences, and Afro-futurism.
Featuring original arrangements and reinterpretations of the saxophonist's key compositions, the Shorter's Vision project will perform on Friday evening in a tribute that will be much more than a tribute, given the exceptional members of the quartet.
Leading the ensemble will be the soprano saxophonist Laura J Marras, formerly a member of the Cagliari Conservatory Jazz Orchestra and Paolo Nonnis's Orchestra Sardica. She will be joined by the piano prowess of Alessandro Di Liberto, who recently collaborated with Marras on her new album "Punti di Vista." The group will also feature Turin-born drummer Enzo Zirilli and Roman bassist Alessandro Maiorino, two well-known figures in Italian jazz with numerous active projects.
