Finding ways forward, even in complex situations, and exploiting gusts of wind to your advantage. "Improving an athlete's performance, achieving set goals, managing the race effectively, recovering from an injury": applied sports psychology explained by Gianna Manca, a professional with offices in Oristano, Sassari, and Cagliari, and a long career. Because the mind in all fields, even and perhaps especially in elite physical activity, is essential to "achieving optimal condition."

What does a sports psychologist do?

We work on several areas. The main one focuses on improving the athlete's performance. We identify their strengths and areas for improvement, then we work with them to tailor a suit to perform well in competition. It's a complex job. It requires a lot of patience and planning.

Why add a sports psychologist to the staff of a football team?

"It's a sort of constant monitoring of what's happening on and off the pitch, keeping the group as cohesive as possible so they can find space that makes them feel good and can be a source and motivation for improving their performance."

She is also the contact person for the Youth and School Sector of Sardinia.

"In recent years, we've offered support and assistance to sports clubs. Youth sectors are areas that need to be greatly strengthened. To do this, you need to study and not think that being a good footballer is enough to work with young people."

How is Sardinian sport doing?

Sardinia needs investment in facilities and professionalism. It's a culture we lack in many areas. People like me are trying to raise the bar and become advocates for these cultural and economic revolutions.
